Hero of Ukraine Dmytro Kotsyubailo killed in battle for Bakhmut

Battalion commander of the 67th Separate Mechanized Brigade and Hero of Ukraine, Dmytro Kotsyubailo (callsign ‘Da Vinci’), was killed in battle near Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, at the age of 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his March 7 evening address.
“Since 2014, he has defended our independence and the dignity of our people,” Zelenskyy said.
“One of the youngest Heroes of Ukraine. One of those whose personal history, character, courage forever became the history, character, and courage of Ukraine.”
The president added that Ukraine will always remember its heroes: “Our memory of them will not perish. But the enemy that came to Ukraine – will.”
Dmytro Kotsyubailo was born in the village of Zadnistrianske, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, and was an active participant in the 2014 Revolution of Dignity. He fought against Russian forces since the very beginning of the Russian invasion in 2014. By 2015, he became a company commander. In December 2021, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. He was the commander of the 1st Separate Mechanized Battalion of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine ‘Da Vinci Wolves.’
“Today, our battle family has suffered an irreparable loss,” – Da Vinci Wolves wrote on Twitter.
“Today, all of Ukraine has lost its legendary commander. From now on, all of us must continue his struggle. In the name of our fallen heroes, we will win this war, we will burn Russian occupiers out from our land. Honor and glory to the hero!
