EU countries have supplied
Ukraine with 220,000 artillery shells and 1,300 missiles since March, the head
of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell said on May 23, as reported by Reuters.
The ammunition was delivered as part of EU’s program to jointly purchase artillery shells for Ukraine, developed in early March.
Borrell stated that the EU aims to achieve the goal of supplying Ukrainian defenders with one million rounds of ammunition by the end of 2023.
" The next days, weeks and months are going to be strategically decisive in the war in Ukraine," he emphasized.
On May 5, the EU agreed to allocate €1 billion from the European Peace Fund to purchase ammunition and missiles for Ukraine.
On March 20, the heads of the foreign ministries of EU countries approved a plan for joint procurement and supply of ammunition to Ukraine, worth €2 billion. It involves the allocation of €1 billion for reimbursement to member states, another €1 billion for joint procurement of ammunition, and an increase in production capacity in the EU.
According to the Financial Times, Ukraine asked the EU to send the Ukrainian Armed Forces 250,000 artillery shells every month to reduce the deficit.
