A Ukrainian Territorial Defense volunteer fighter managed to shoot down an overflying Russian cruise missile with machine gun fire near Kyiv, local media outlet Obozrevatel reported on Dec. 16.
One of his fellow service members said visible sparks were flying off the missile after it was hit, prompting it to fall in the middle of a field next Ukrainian positions.
"Almost impossible, but that’s what happened," Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers commented.
On Dec. 16, Russia launched another massive missile strike at Ukraine’s energy facilities. According to Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the salvo included 76 cruise missiles, 60 of which were successfully intercepted.
Kyiv alone was targeted by 40 of the incoming missiles, with 37 of them getting shot down.
