Russian forces are conducting a mostly unsuccessful offensive on four fronts simultaneously, with their greatest efforts concentrated on establishing control over Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast, though they are unable to capture the city, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar wrote on Telegram on April 1.
“To sum it up in plain language, it remains quite difficult in the areas of the defensive operation in the East,” she wrote.
The four fronts the aggressor is conducting their offensive actions in are Aviyivka, Bakhmut, Lyman, and Maryinsk.
The enemy’s advances have mostly been unsuccessful, Malyar said.
“The aggressor is concentrating their greatest efforts on establishing control over Bakhmut and trying to advance towards the city center,” she wrote. “They have had some minor fluctuating successes in certain areas, but they cannot capture the city.”
“Fierce fighting continues both around and inside the city. The enemy is also conducting offensive actions in the Avdiyivka area to surround the city and block supply routes,” she added.
Meanwhile, she said that battles are ongoing in Bilohorivka and Maryinka.
Bakhmut Deputy Mayor Oleksandr Marchenko has also confirmed that fighting is occurring “practically in the central area of the city.”
While there are still food and water supplies in the city, it is dangerous to move around due to the constant chaotic shelling, Marchenko told Ukrainian news outlet Suspilne on March 30.
“Access to the city is currently impossible for civilians because there is fighting at the entrance to the city, but communication is breaking through in some places,” he said, noting that there are locations where satellite-based Starlink Internet terminals are working, allowing residents to communicate.
Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov previously said that the Russian occupiers are suffering “crazy losses” in Bakhmut, and that the continuation of the city’s defense limits the enemy’s capabilities and stabilizes the front line.
