Finbar Cafferkey, a native of Achill Island, Ireland, was killed while fighting alongside Ukrainian troops near Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, The Irish Independent reported on April 27.
According to the article, Cafferkey had combat experience from fighting ISIS militants in Syria.
His family told the newspaper they are still waiting to hear details of his death.
“We are grieving…it’s a private matter. I don’t want to say anything further,” The Independent quotes Cafferkey’s father, Tom.
Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin also honored Cafferkey’s memory.
“It is clear that he was a young man with clear principles,” the minister said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family today. His family has asked for privacy, and I will not comment on this at this time. I will allow the family to mourn this very sad loss.”
