Israeli FM conveys Blinken’s message to Lavrov

During a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Israel's new FM Eli Cohen delivered a message from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, The Times of Israel reported on Jan. 3, citing a senior diplomat.

According to the source, during a telephone conversation with Lavrov, Cohen passed him a message from Blinken, with whom he spoke on Jan. 2. The topic of discussion wasn’t specified. According to an Israeli official, the call was requested by the Russian side.

The Times of Israel also states that around noon on Jan. 3, Israel requested a conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. The publication then refers to a "high-ranking Ukrainian official" who said that Kyiv expected Israel to cancel or postpone the conversation with Lavrov, until the call with Kuleba took place – but that didn’t happen.

Earlier, The Times of Israel reported that the cabinet of the newly elected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated a change in policy towards Ukraine.

According to Walla News journalist Barak Ravid, Cohen hinted that he wouldn’t publicly denounce Russia for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, the minister promised to continue humanitarian assistance to Kyiv.
