The Japanese government intends to expel the Russian consul following Russia’s intimidation of Japan’s consul in the far eastern Russian city of Vladivostok, the Japanese Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported on Oct, 4, citing government sources.
Japan is also considering declaring the Russian diplomat persona non grata.
In September, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia ordered the Japanese consul to leave the country, accusing the consul of alleged “espionage". Japanese authorities say that the Russian special services blindfolded and applied "measures of physical influence" to the consul.
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi denied Russian allegations of espionage, say-ing there was "absolutely no evidence that the consul was engaged in any kind of illegal activity."
