Jewish pilgrims who come to the city of Uman in Cherkasy Oblast each year could now be at risk from Russian missile attacks, Ukraine's ambassador to Israel Yevhen Korniichuk said on Aug 9.
Korniichuk’s warning came after a Russian cruise missile was shot down over the city on Aug. 8, injuring two people.
“A Russian missile was shot down near Uman, damaging civilian infrastructure,” Korniichuk said. “If such attacks by Russia take place in the month of Tishrei, they may cause, God forbid, many victims among Jews visiting Uman from all over the world.”
Tishrei in 2022 begins on the evening of the day preceding Sept. 26. Breslov Hasidic Jews flock to the town of Uman every year to visit the grave of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, the founder of their movement.
On the morning of Aug 8, a Russian missile was shot down in the sky above Uman in Cherkasy Oblast. According to the agency, fragments of the missile damaged a civilian infrastructure facility causing a fire at the crash site. Two people were injured and hospitalized.
In addition, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down a Russian Kalibr-type cruise missile over Odesa Oblast. It was launched from a submarine in the Black Sea. No casualties, injuries or damage were reported.
