Tokayev presses Putin to halt war, warns fighting helps Russia’s adversaries

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev told Russian dictator Vladimir Putin that Russia’s war against Ukraine must end as soon as possible, Russian media reported on July 25.
Tokayev said many people, including those in Kazakhstan, did not fully understand the nature of the conflict. He contrasted it with the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, whose nature and historical roots were clear, he said. Russia’s war against Ukraine was far more difficult to understand.
Tokayev proposed freezing the war with support from world powers.
“All of this must be stopped. Otherwise, it would play into the hands of Russia’s adversaries,” the Kazakh president said. He also described Russia as “a great power.”
Tokayev also told Putin that the Russian leader had demonstrated the greatest possible political flexibility during the meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, and proposed returning to the Istanbul format for negotiations. Putin, in turn, promised to update Tokayev on developments concerning Ukraine.
