Kazakhstan investigating its citizens for participating in war in Ukraine

Kazakhstan’s National Security Committee (NSC) is investigating 10 criminal cases regarding the participation of Kazakh citizens in the war in Ukraine, the KazTAG news agency reported on April 16.

“The NSC is investigating 10 criminal cases on the facts of the participation of citizens of Kazakhstan in military operations on the territory of Ukraine,” the committee confirmed in response to a request from the KazTAG editorial office.

There is no information about the persons involved or their actions as pretrial evidence is not subject to disclosure in accordance with Art. 201 of Kazakhstan’s Criminal Code.

Kazakhstan can imprison citizens for up to nine years for participating in foreign armed conflicts, according to Article 172 of its Criminal Code.
