The Ukrainian army struck the positions of the Russian invading forces on the Kinburn Spit on Jan. 9, Natalia Humeniuk, spokesperson for Ukraine's Southern Command, commented on Ukrainian TV.

She stated that the attack was a response to the shelling of the town of Ochakiv, which was shelled from Russian positions on the Spit. Humeniuk explained that the Russians shelled Ochakiv in revenge for a successful Ukrainian attack on Russian manpower and materiel. According to the spokesperson,  Russian troops regularly use the Spit to shell Ukrainian cities and then "flee immediately, as they know the response won’t wait.”
