After a delay of almost two years, Ukraine’s Specialized Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office or SAPO finally has a head, Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff of the President’s Office said in a post on the Telegram messenger on July 28.

Yermak said Oleksandr Klymenko, a detective at the National Anti-corruption Bureau of Ukraine, had been confirmed in the post by newly appointed Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin.

“I congratulate Andriy Kostin on starting work as the head of the Prosecutor General’s Office, and Oleksandr Klymenko on his appointment as the head of the SAPO,” Yermak wrote. “I wish you effective work.”

Kostin was himself appointed by Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, the day before on July 27, only hours after he was nominated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The competition committee for the post of SAPO head approved the appointment of Klymenko on July 19. But for almost two years previously the committee failed to confirm any candidates, with anti-corruption activists in Ukraine claiming the appointment had been stalled for political reasons.

The appointment of the winner of the competition to head the SAPO was also one of the requirements for the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

“The fight against corruption is a priority for our state, as our investment attractiveness and business freedom depend on its success,” Yermak added in his Telegram message.

“And our (Prosecutor General’s Office), in particular, has an important mission – investigating Russia's crimes against Ukraine.

“We must bring the Russian criminals to justice.”
