Kushner and Netanyahu say Israeli troops will stay until Hamas fully disarms

U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Jared Kushner and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed that Israeli troops will remain in the Gaza Strip until Hamas is fully disarmed and the enclave is demilitarized, Bloomberg reported.
Kushner met Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Aug. 17 after holding talks with Hamas representatives in Egypt the previous day.
Washington and Israel agreed that the redeployment of Israeli forces from Gaza would begin only after Hamas is fully disarmed and the territory demilitarized, a representative of the Peace Council established by Trump said.
The conditions include surrendering both light and heavy weapons and dismantling Hamas’ network of tunnels.
Bloomberg noted, however, that the conditions could become an obstacle to reaching a final agreement.
Hamas insists that Israeli forces must leave Gaza before the disarmament process is completed.
Kushner told Fox News after the talks that the first practical steps toward demilitarizing Gaza could begin within 30 days.
The parties could begin handing over some weapons and dismantling some tunnels within the following 60 to 90 days, he said.
Kushner also said the United States would not support reconstruction in Gaza until the demilitarization process begins.
If Hamas refuses to comply with the agreement, Israel could expect broader support from the United States and other countries for further action against the group, Kushner added.
Hamas representatives previously said they were prepared to begin the disarmament process only after Netanyahu publicly confirms that Israel is ready to comply with the terms of the Gaza peace plan.
