Latvian law enforcement has put out an international warrant for the arrest of its own citizen, Alexander Malyshev, for fighting against the Ukrainian Armed Forces with militants of the so-called ‘LNR’ (Luhansk People’s Republic), Latvia’s Security Service said on April 18.

The criminal case dates to before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, from March 10, 2021.

Latvian law enforcement established that Malyshev has been in Russian-controlled territory of Ukraine’s Luhansk Oblast since at least 2015.

“Malyshev was a long-time member of the so-called 14th battalion of territorial defense of the 2nd army corps of the People’s Militia of the ‘LNR.’ He participated in combat operations and attacks on the Ukrainian Armed Forces, thereby opposing the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the report stated.

The Latvian Security Service sent the case to the Prosecutor’s Office of the Riga District Court last summer, calling for criminal prosecution of the suspect under the Criminal Code article on participating in an armed conflict.

Currently, Malyshev is wanted internationally.
