Latvia will launch in April the second phase of its 63.9 km border fence with Belarus, Delfi news site reported on April 9.

About 53 km of fence was finished in the first stage, before wintery conditions prevented work from continuing in the swampy area. Construction requires solid ground and temperatures above +10°C (or 50°F).

The terrain is also challenging as the fence is built on steep slopes and wetlands, while at the same time roads must be made safe for traffic.

In parallel with the construction of the fence, preparations are underway to equip it with modern technologies.

The full project provides for 173 kilometers of fence along the border between Latvia and Belarus.

The first stage of the 85.9 km of fence construction will be completed by this fall. The second(63.9 km) and the third (16.7 km) stages will be finished by the end of 2024.

"Construction of the first two stages of border infrastructure totals 102.7 million euros," the message reads.

Poland completed the construction of a five-meter high fence on the border with Belarus in June 2022. It took five months to build.

Lithuania established the physical barrier along the land border with Belarus in August 2022.
