Leaders of the ruling German Social Democratic party (SPD), Lars Klingbeil and Rolf Mützenich, arrived in Kyiv in the morning of March 6, according to the German Tagesschau daily newspaper.

It is their first visit to Kyiv since the Russian full-scale invasion began.

"Together with Rolf Mützenich we are here (in Kyiv) to speak with many people in Ukraine and to see how we can further support (the country)," Klingbeil said.

The German politicians are to hold talks with officials from the Ukrainian government and parliament, but the schedule hasn't been made public due for safety reasons.

So far, Klingbeil and Mützenich have already met with Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and his brother Volodymyr.

One of the three coalition parties in the German Bundestag, the SPD, of which Chancellor Olaf Scholz is a member, has for years been a supporter of an "eastern policy" that implied close ties with Russia. After the outbreak of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, the party's leaders and many members admitted that they were mistaken.

The party intends to officially review its foreign policy and its attitude toward Russia at its party congress in December.

At the same time, SPD leaders Klingbeil and Mützenich insist on diplomacy as a major factor in the effort to end the war.
