Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has called on Western countries to provide Ukraine with modern weapons systems, Lithuanian newspaper Baltijas Balss reported on Dec. 13.
According to the Landsbergis, stocks of Soviet-style weapons are running out not only in Ukraine, but everywhere.
Soviet weapons and ammunition are no longer produced or are produced in very small quantities, so Ukraine may face a shortage of ammunition, said the minister.
“That is why it’s necessary to supply a new type of weapons. The best type of weapons that can be supplied now are Western top battle tanks, such as the German Leopard or the American Abrams,” Landsbergis said.
Such weapons could change the situation, which “would allow us to move the front up and advance further,” he said.
Ukraine also needs long-range missiles and more warplanes, he added.
Previously, German mass media, citing their own sources, reported that Washington made it clear to Berlin that it was not against the transfer of heavy tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This information was confirmed by the head of the defense committee of the Bundestag, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
The German government announced on Dec. 9 that Germany was continuing negotiations with the United States and other partners regarding the supply of tanks to Ukraine.
