France will continue to engage diplomatically with both Russia and Ukraine, hoping to bring the two sides closer to compromise, French President Emmanuel Macron said during a press briefing on Oct. 21.
At the same time, Macron reiterated that neither France nor any other country has the right to decide when Ukraine is to engage in peace talks with Moscow.
“We can’t decide for Ukraine when it should start negotiations with Russia, by we ought to maintain dialogue with each side,” said Macron.
“It’s necessary to do, as at some point they will have to sit at the negotiating table.”
The president added that while France is not a belligerent in the war, it will continue supporting Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion.
