Majority of Russian troops now 25 km from Kyiv centre – UK MoD
Most of the ground forces of the Russian invasion force in Ukraine are now located about 25 kilometres from the centre of Kyiv, the UK Ministry of Defence wrote in a tweet on March 12.
Active combat is ongoing in the area immediately northwest of Kyiv, the MoD notes.
The UK government adds that it believes that the elements of a large Russian column, north of Kyiv, have dispersed, which may indicate an at-tempt by Russian forces to encircle the city.
At the same time, this could also be an attempt by Russia to reduce its vulnerability to Ukrainian counterattacks, which have inflicted significant damage on Russian forces.
The cities of Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mariupol remain encircled and continue to come under heavy artillery fire from Russia, the MoD said.
