A man poured gasoline on Russia’s main Christmas tree, which stands on the territory of the Kremlin on Red Square in Moscow, and tried to set it on fire, the Russian state-controlled newspaper Izvestia reported on Dec. 30.

However, the man did not succeed in carrying out his plan, as he was detained by the security guards.

The motives of his act are unknown, Russian media said.

Russia is currently in the 311th day of a savage war against Ukraine, which has killed thousands, inflicted genocidal acts and war crimes, and seen mass Russian missile attacks deny millions of Ukrainians power, water and heat for days at a time.

Meanwhile, Russian media report that access to Red Square will be closed on New Year’s Eve in Moscow.
