The Ukrainian troops defending Mariupol will not surrender, as they have been ordered to defend the Azovstal steel mill and will not violate these orders, Azov Regiment intelligence officer Ilya Samoylenko has told Sky News.

"We cannot surrender because we have no order to surrender,” Samoylenko said. “We will not violate the previous order. It is very important. We’re clearly following orders.”

According to him, the number of wounded and dead defenders of Mariupol is "very large."

“No one expected us to stand up to the Russians for so long, but we’re still fighting. We’re suffering heavy losses,” he said.

Samoylenko added that those in Azovstal have "extremely limited resources" and believe that "every day could be their last."

“The result could be… (to be taken prisoner) by the enemy, which means death for us… Our lives mean nothing, but our struggle means everything," he said.

Earlier the Azov Regiment said that its soldiers do not have a high chance of survival if they are taken prisoner.

"Surrender to us is unacceptable,” the statement said. “Every prisoner is a source of political and military pressure (against Ukraine)."
