Kostyuk reaches first career Wimbledon semifinal, routing Italy's top seed

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk continues to make history at Wimbledon after defeating Jasmine Paolini, Italy's top-ranked player, to reach her first career semifinal at the tournament on July 8.
The first set was closely contested, but Kostyuk pulled away after a 2-2 tie to close it out 6-3. In the second set, she quickly built a 4-1 lead, allowing Paolini to win just one more game as she took the set 6-2.

It was the fourth career meeting between the two players. Paolini had won their previous two matchups, while Kostyuk's only prior win came at Cincinnati in 2022.
Kostyuk will face the winner of the match between Czech player Linda Noskova and Belgium's Elise Mertens in the semifinal, scheduled for July 9, with play starting no earlier than 3 p.m. Kyiv time.
Path to the semifinal
In the previous round, Kostyuk defeated Ashlyn Krueger, who had earlier eliminated fellow Ukrainian Daria Snigur. Before that, Kostyuk defeated American Emma Navarro in three sets, and prior to that, she overcame “neutral” Anna Blinkova in a difficult match to reach the third round.
In her opening match, Kostyuk recorded her most lopsided win at Wimbledon, defeating Nadiia Podoroska.
