Merz to give Trump a mystery gift and handwritten letter for 80th birthday

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will mark President Donald Trump's 80th birthday with a handwritten letter and a gift he plans to present in person during the upcoming G7 summit, Spiegel reported on June 13.
According to German government sources in Berlin, the German chancellor sent Trump a handwritten letter that is to be delivered to the White House by a special envoy.
In addition, during the G7 summit in Evian, France, on June 15, Merz is expected to personally present Trump with a gift. Its nature has not been disclosed.
Trump is set to celebrate his 80th birthday on June 14, near the White House in Washington. The event is expected to draw a large number of guests and will feature a mixed martial arts tournament that has sparked debate and criticism in recent months.
After the celebrations, the U.S. president will travel to France for the G7 summit, where he is expected to meet with Merz and other leaders of major Western nations.
Der Spiegel noted that the German chancellor has previously presented Trump with symbolic gifts on several occasions. During his first visit to the United States nearly a year ago, he brought a copy of the birth certificate of Trump's grandfather, who came from the German town of Kallstadt, along with a golf club. In March this year, Merz gave the U.S. president a copy of the 1785 Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Prussia.
The magazine added that relations between the two leaders have recently become more strained following Merz's remarks about the conflict involving Iran. In response, Trump announced plans to reduce the U.S. military presence in Germany. While a separate meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 summit remains likely, it has not yet been officially confirmed.
