Military commentator Denys Popovych in an interview with Radio NV on Oct. 6 named the main goals of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the right bank of Kherson Oblast – the area west of the Dnipro River.
"As far as I understand, the main goal of the offensive on the right bank of Kherson Oblast is not so much (the city of) Kherson as Beryslav and Nova Kakhovka,” Popovych said. “We must advance in this direction and seize the crossing at Nova Kakhovka.”
He said that after the liberation of Nova Kakhovka, the Armed Forces will have the opportunity to “advance further, to the left bank, towards the further de-occupation of Kherson, and possibly Zaporizhzhya Oblasts.”
“However, this prospect is a little extreme,” added the military expert. “I think our commanders understand it, but the primary goal of this offensive in Kherson Oblast is the takeover of Nova Kakhovka and Beryslav.”
In an evening address on Oct. 4, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Armed Forces of Ukraine are advancing quickly and effectively towards the south of the country in the current defense operation, and in just the week since Russia held its sham referendums in Ukraine dozens of settlements in the Kherson, Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts have been liberated.
On Oct. 7, the spokesperson for the Ukrainian military's South Operational Command, Natalia Humeniuk, reported that the total area of liberated territory in Kherson Oblast had reached up to 500 square kilometers.
