A Russian missile hit a river ferry station during a massive attack on Mykolaiv overnight on Oct. 13, killing a man, Governor of Mykolaiv Oblast Vitalii Kim has reported on his Telegram messenger channel.
The building was ruined in the attack, Kim said. Other missiles landed on open land.
“A man was found under the rubble of the rescue station. Sadly, he was dead,” Kim added.
He said that the Russians had fired eight S-300 missiles at Mykolaiv. These missiles, normally used as surface-to-air missiles, can be used to attack ground targets, though they are inaccurate in this mode.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine later clarified that the dead man had served in the State Paramilitary Mine-Rescue Service.
“He devoted himself to rescuing others. This night he was on duty for emergency situations at water objects in Mykolaiv, when a Russian missile claimed his life,” the service said in a post on Facebook.
At night on Oct. 13 Russian missiles hit a residential building in Mykolaiv, completely destroying two storeys. The first, second and third storeys were damaged.
An 11-year-old boy was rescued from the basement, where he had been trapped for six hours.
Seven more people might still be under the rubble, resucers believe.
