The Parliament of Moldova has extended for another 60 days the state of emergency in the country due to Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine, local outlet Newsmaker reported on Dec. 1.
The decision was supported by 55 of the country’s MPs.
Parliamentarians of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) voted in favor, while the opposition left the meeting hall in protest.
The proposal to extend the state of emergency in the country was made by Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița from the rostrum of parliament.
She said that, due to the situation in the region and the war, Moldova remains too vulnerable to lift the state of emergency.
“Illegal attempts to seize the territories of the neighbouring state and the risk of the use of weapons of mass destruction, as well as the intensification of hybrid attacks and attempts to destabilize the socio-economic situation in Moldova, oblige us to react quickly to protect our citizens and refugees,” the prime minister said.
The parliamentary opposition opposed the extension of the state of emergency. According to PSRM MP Vasile Bolea, the government has all the powers it requires to work normally.
“We have been living in a state of emergency for a year,” fellow PSRM lawmaker Vlad Batrîncea said, seconding the objection.
“This is an extraordinary measure, and you have not convinced us that it is beneficial for the country. We will not vote.”
The state of emergency in Moldova was introduced after the beginning of the full-scale Russian war against Ukraine on Feb. 24.
