More than 40,000 women are currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 8,000 of whom are officers, the commander of the Joint Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Serhiy Nayev, said on Ukrainian national television on Oct. 14.
“Currently, more than 5,000 women are in areas where active hostilities are taking place,” Nayev said.
He said that among the women in the Ukrainian army, there are artillery battery commanders, commanders of infantry platoons, and commanders of unmanned aircraft squads, as well as snipers.
“The range of specialities that Ukrainian women have mastered is absolutely comparable to that of men,” the general said.
“Therefore, we can affirmatively say that women and men together carry the heavy burden of military service and perform tasks to repel armed aggression.”
Ukraine celebrates the Day of Defenders on Oct. 14. This year, the country celebrates it in the conditions of a full-scale war with Russia. The Russian invaders continue to fire missiles at Ukrainian cities, but the Ukrainian military step by step continues to liberate Ukrainian territories.
