A National Guard serviceman has once again shot down a Russian cruise missile with an Igla man-portable air defense system or MANPADS during a Russian mass missile strike at Kyiv overnight on May 29, the National Guard of Ukraine (NGU) reported on its website.

The guardsman, known by the callsign Pokemon, is a 20-year-old soldier from the Bureviy brigade’s anti-aircraft missile and artillery unit.

He had previously shot down a Russian cruise missile with the same weapon during the Russian massive missile attack on Kyiv on May 9.

This time, the soldier successfully destroyed the air target at 3.20 a.m.

“It was more difficult to capture the target as it was still quite dark,” he said.

“But the result is obvious. I had even more emotions from realization and joy than the first time. I understand that it’s not only a downed missile, but also lives saved.”

Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 37 Russian Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles and 29 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 suicide drones in another Russian massive air attack overnight on May 29.

The wreckage of intercepted missiles fell in several of Kyiv’s districts. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

Meanwhile, port infrastructure in Odesa Oblast and an airfield in Khmelnytskyi Oblast were damaged as a result of the attack, while an outbuilding burned down in Lviv Oblast due to the fall of debris from missiles.
