NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was impressed by professional skills of Ukrainian soldiers currently training in the UK, the alliance said in a message on its website on Nov. 9.
After visiting the Lydd Army Camp military base – where the UK army is helping train Ukrainian troops – Stoltenberg thanked the UK, Canada, Lithuania, and other countries that contribute to the effort. He also noted London’s leading role in helping Ukraine defend itself against the Russian invasion.
"...I am impressed with what I saw,” said Stoltenberg.
“I saw the skills and dedication of the Ukrainian soldiers who are trained here. How much they learn, how much they can achieve in just a few weeks, is inspiring, and I am sure that it will have a great importance at the front in Ukraine."
In September, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that about 5,000 Ukrainian servicemen had already been trained in the UK to effectively fight invading Russian forces. Instructors from Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Ukraine, and the UK itself help train Ukrainian defenders.
During a visit to Kyiv in June, then-PM Boris Johnson announced a program for Ukrainian troops that would train up to 10,000 soldiers every 120 days.
