UK Defense Secretary Shapps arrives in Kyiv, meets with Zelenskyy
The UK’s newly appointed defense secretary, Grant Shapps, made his first visit to Ukraine in his new job on Sept. 28, during which he held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The meeting, announced by the Ukrainian head of state, was also attended by Admiral Antony Radakin, the Chief of the Defense Staff of the United Kingdom.
“Thank you for the substantial financial, defense, and humanitarian support for Ukraine! Our cooperation in the military sphere significantly enhances the capabilities of Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield,” Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram, reporting the meeting with Shapps.
Zelenskyy’s discussions with Shapps revolved around reinforcing Ukraine’s air defense system ahead of the winter season and initiating negotiations with London regarding security guarantees for Ukraine.
Shapps reassured Zelesnkyy that Ukraine remains at the forefront of UK’s attention and that London will stand side by side with Kyiv. He conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former UK defense Minister Ben Wallace.
Shapps became UK Secretary of Defense on Aug. 31. He had previously visited Ukraine during the full-scale conflict as the UK’s Energy Minister.
