There are no “rational arguments” for Berlin’s refusal to supply Kyiv with modern Leopard main battle tanks (MBTs) and Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in a Twitter post on Sept. 13.
“Disappointing signals from Germany while Ukraine needs Leopards and Marders now — to liberate people and save them from genocide,” said Kuleba.
“Not a single rational argument on why these weapons cannot be supplied, only abstract fears and excuses. What is Berlin afraid of that Kyiv is not?”
Germany’s Green Party – part of the ruling coalition – earlier called for Ukraine to be provided with German Leopard-2 MBTs and Marder IFVs.
German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht declined Ukraine’s request for these modern heavy weapons. According to her, “no other country has yet supplied Western MBTs” to Ukraine, and Germany is reluctant to do it unilaterally.
