Ukrainian diplomats and the diaspora will work with Swiss elites to unlock a way to supply Swiss weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Servant of the People faction head David Arakhamia said on Telegram on March 15.
“We need Swiss weapons,” he said. “And we’ll get them.”
Arakhamia reiterated that the Swiss government vows to maintain unwavering support for Ukraine and already supports Russian sanctions.
At the same time, Switzerland has so far blocked the transfer of Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine, referring to its policy of neutrality.
“We emphasize that there should be no neutrality towards genocide and war crimes,” the MP said.
“Russia doesn’t want to withdraw its troops from Ukraine, their missiles continue to kill our people. We are forced to defend ourselves. And we need weapons for this.”
Arakhamia added that it is pre-election season in Switzerland and many interpretations of Swiss neutrality have already emerged.
“However, our diplomats and the diaspora plan to work with Swiss elites to finally sway public opinion in our favor and unblock the supply of Swiss weapons by partner countries,” the official said.
“In general, we’re optimistic about the situation. This is not the first time we have faced objections. But we have learned to overcome them as well.”
Swiss parliament’s National Council rejected a proposal to ease the ban on the re-export of ammunition on March 8.
Earlier, Swiss parliament’s Council of States made a similar decision.
