The European Union has not observed any significant
arms
smuggling from Ukraine into Europe during the war with Russia, EU Home
Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said in an interview with Reuters on May
11.
"I must say that we have not seen any industrial smuggling of firearms out of Ukraine," Johansson said during her visit to Kyiv.
However, the official noted that there were isolated cases of smuggling small arms out of Ukraine, mostly by private individuals who tried to take them as trophies or for personal protection.
"… they (smuggled weapons) are being taken, of course, at the border by the border guards," she adds.
The commissioner emphasized that the issue of arms smuggling was one of the main topics discussed during her meeting with the Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
