Russia continues to transform occupied Mariupol in Donetsk Oblast  into a forward operating base, adding a helicopter pad to the territory of Azovstal, said Mariupol mayoral advisor Petro Andryushchenko on Telegram on March 17.

Russia’s military have been constantly flying planes over the city and now, with the addition of helicopters, will further transform Mariupol into a military base, Andryushchenko said.

The situation in Mariupol has been tense recently, with increasingly frequent reports of attacks on the Russian military.

The Head of the United Coordinating Press Center of the Operational Command South, Natalia Humeniuk, previously stated that Mariupol is already within reach of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

Mariupol City Council reported that two strikes were heard in the city on March 11, probably in locations of occupiers.

Russia has increased their air defenses in the city since three new explosions were heard there on March 13.
