Russia attacked Ukraine on Feb. 24. Oct. 19 is the 239th day of full-scale war. The invading forces initially tried to advance from the north, east and south, shelling peaceful cities throughout Ukraine with artillery and from the air. Missile attacks by Russia across the country are still ongoing, the occupiers are attacking civilian objects.

During this time, the Kremlin has changed the goals of its war in Ukraine several times.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, only one regional center, Kherson, has come under the control of the Russian invaders. Parts of Zaporizhzhya, Kherson, Luhansk, Donetsk, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv oblasts were also captured.

The Armed Forces launched a counter-offensive in the south and east of Ukraine, striking Russian warehouses with ammunition and enemy manpower, and succeeded in liberating almost the whole of Kharkiv Oblast.

After the successes of the Armed Forces on the battlefield, the invaders in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya oblasts held sham referendums among the local residents (often at gunpoint) on joining Russia, and on Sept. 30, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin claimed that Russia had annexed the captured Ukrainian territories.

The claimed annexations are illegal and have gone unrecognized by most countries.

A partial mobilization was announced in the Russian Federation on Sept. 21.
