The only way Poland will be dragged into the war Russia is waging on Ukraine is if Warsaw stops supporting Kyiv, "and then the war will come to us by itself," Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said.
As reported by Polish radio station Radio Lublin on Nov. 18, Morawiecki said that after the incident with the impact of a missile near Przewodów, a village not far from the Ukrainian border, those who still have doubts should realize that the war against Ukraine is "a very real threat to Poland."
"Unfortunately, the fires of war have spread to our territory for the first time,” he said.
“This is not the first such critical situation,” he went on.
“Amid last year's attempts by migrants to break through the Polish-Belarusian border, we were already experiencing a series of hybrid attacks and fake news.”
The Polish prime minister stressed that the root cause of the missile incident was Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
"Today, there is only one way to involve Poland in the war, and this way is to turn away from Ukraine,” Morawiecki said.
“If we do not support Ukraine, sooner or later it will become more dependent on Russia. The war will come to us by itself. Putin will not stop, the Kremlin will go further. Passivity will be suicide for us.”
During a massive Russian air attack on the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine on Nov. 15, a missile fell onto the village of Przewodów in the Lublin district of Poland about 7 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. Two people were killed by the explosive impact of the missile.
After that, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki convened an urgent meeting of Poland’s National Security and Defense Affairs committee.
Polish President Andrzej Duda later said the missile could have been fired by Ukrainian air defenses as they were intercepting incoming Russian cruise missiles inbound at targets near Poland’s border.
In the United States, the White House said that whatever conclusion the investigation into the missile incident reached, the ultimate responsibility for it lies with Moscow, as its missile strikes against Ukraine were the reason for Kyiv launching air defense missiles in the first place.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that, according to the Ukrainian military, the missile that fell in Poland was not Ukrainian. He also stressed that Ukrainian experts should participate in the investigation of the missile impact and get access to the explosion site and all radar tracking data.
Ukrainian experts were allowed to the site of the missile crash in Przewodów on Nov. 17.
The results of the investigation may be released within a few days.
