The Operational Command South says it is too early to talk about the liberation of Island Ostriv Velykyi Potyomkin (lit. “Big Potemkin Island) in Kherson Oblast and premature announcements can only harm an operation to retake it, the head of the Joint Press Center of the Defense Forces of the South of Ukraine, Natalia Humeniuk, announced during the national telethon on Jan. 3.

"Hoisting the flag is a signal to the enemy that we are working, that the land is ours, that it is all Ukraine, and a reminder of the irreversibility of the processes we have planned," she said.

Ostriv Velykyi Potyomkin is located between the west and east banks of the Dnipro River.

The day before, MP Oleksiy Honcharenko shared a video on Telegram featuring the installation of the Ukrainian flag on the island.

"The Armed Forces of Ukraine have liberated Ostriv Velykyi Potyomkin," Honcharenko’s caption to the video reads.
