More than 23,000 Hasidic Jewish pilgrims have so far travelled to Uman in Cherkasy Oblast for the annual Rosh Hashanah celebration at the tomb of Reb Nachman, founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement, the United Jewish Community of Ukraine said in a Telegram post on Sept. 25.
According to the State Migration Service of Ukraine, 19,821 pilgrims were in Cherkasy Oblast, as of Sept. 23.
Reb Nachman’s tomb in Uman is a major religious destination for Hasidic Jews, with 20,000-40,000 pilgrims celebrating Rosh Hashanah there every year.
Ukraine’s airspace is closed to commercial aircraft, so pilgrims had to travel to Uman within Ukraine by road and rail.
