Russian and Belarusian athletes should be banned
from participating in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, the Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) said in a resolution adopted on June
22.
According to Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko, the motion was supported by 71 assembly delegates.
“Russian and Belarusian athletes must not set foot at the Olympic Games; sport is also about dignity and values,” Honcharenko said in a Telegram post.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the games, with several conditions. After this announcement, the Ukrainian government banned Ukrainian athletes from competing in events with Russian contestants, including qualifying events for the 2024 Paris games.
On April 5, the International Equestrian Federation refused to allow Russian athletes to compete in their events, despite the IOC recommendation.
