U.S. Department of Defense will soon begin training Ukrainian military personnel to operate and maintain Patriot anti-air missile batteries, CNN reported on Dec. 22, citing an unnamed Pentagon official.
According to the source, the training would begin "very soon" and will take several months to complete.
On Dec. 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Washington in his first trip abroad since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy met with U.S. President Joe Biden and delivered a speech to a joint U.S. Congress session, while the White House announced a $1.85 billion security assistance package for Ukraine – including a Patriot air defense battery.
White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said it took the U.S. military "a long time” to get trained on how to use Patriot systems.
