Photographer Marka Syrko has posted a photo of a Ukrainian soldier who lost his legs defending Ukraine against the ongoing full-scale Russian invasion, on Instagram on Dec. 15.

The soldier, Oleksandr “Teren” Budko, was badly injured in the Izyum area, and lost both his legs. He posed naked for the photo.

"I don't know if I will be able to find more heroes like him who would agree to such a photoshoot,” Syrko wrote in a comment to the photo.

“I realize that there could be some judgement, but I work with bodies and I will do so in the future. I would like to dedicate this series of works to the most unsubstantial ancient art - ancient Roman statues in the Louvre - that reminds me of his strength and courage and fragility at the same time, that a wish appears to keep them safe so they would exist and just be priceless because they matter so much to us - not statues...later I'll be able to verbalize this conception, but now I'm guided by feelings.”
