The Azov Regiment on May 10 published photos of badly wounded Ukrainian soldiers who are still holding out at the Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol, even in the face of daily attacks by Russian forces.

“The while civilized world must see the conditions in which our wounded and maimed defenders of Mariupol are, and act,” a message accompanying the photos reads.

The wounded are being treated in poor sanitary conditions, lacking sterile bandages, medical supplies, and even food, the Azov soldiers said.

They urged the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to act on their core values and humanitarian ideals, and to rescue the wounded, who are no longer combatants.

“Military service members, whom you see in (these) photos, along with hundreds more at Azovstal, were badly wounded defending Ukraine and the civilized world; is Ukraine and the international community really not able to protect and take care of them?”

The regiment demanded the urgent evacuation of wounded fighters to government-controlled Ukraine, where they can be provided with proper medical care.

According to Ukraine’s Deputy PM, Iryna Vereshchuk, around 1,000 Ukrainian troops remain holed up at Azovstal.

Adviser to Ukraine’s Presidential Office, Mykhailo Podolyak, said that the government is doing everything it can to secure the evacuation of people from Mariupol’s Azovstal. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, it is currently impossible to break the Russian siege and relieve Azovstal by military means.

Besides the Azov Regiment, Azovstal garrison consists of Ukrainian Marines, National Guard troops, border guards, policemen, and local volunteers.
