The Polish government has blocked a European Union package deal that would provide EUR 18 billion (about $19 billion) to Ukraine in 2023, U.S. political news outlet Politico reported on Dec. 14, referring to four European diplomats.
Poland objects to one of the points of the deal concerning a minimum corporate tax rate at 15%.
The issue could not be resolved at the embassy level, so it is to be brought up at the summit of EU leaders on Dec. 15-16.
As vetoing at least one of the points of the document makes its adoption impossible, Poland has blocked EUR 18 billion of aid to Ukraine.
"There’s a lot of frustration with Poland jeopardizing Ukraine aid by blocking the minimum tax,” said an EU diplomat, describing the move as “another hostage-taking situation."
Previously, the aid package had been thought to have been finally hammered out after Hungary withdrew its veto.
