Poland halts MiG-29 jet transfers over unfulfilled drone deal with Ukraine

Poland will not transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine after Kyiv failed to fulfill an agreement on drone technology cooperation according to Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Polsat News reported on June 29.
The minister stated that Warsaw proposed transferring the fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for access to Ukrainian drone technology and know-how.
“I proposed what I think was a very partner-like approach: MiGs for drones,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
“The Ukrainians initially accepted this but failed to follow through, so there are no MiGs for Ukraine because there are no drones, or drone capabilities, for Poland.”
He added that Poland is looking to develop its own UAV capabilities and planned to gain access to combat-tested Ukrainian technology.
The minister emphasized that while the Polish government strives to build relations with Ukraine on the principle of reciprocity, it does not question the previous administration's decision to provide unconditional military assistance at the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Ukraine and Poland signed a bilateral security agreement outlining the potential transfer of Polish MiG-29 fighter jets, contingent on Warsaw receiving replacement aircraft. Since then, Polish authorities have repeatedly maintained that any transfer remains strictly dependent on preserving the country's own defensive capabilities.
