Accumulated damage to electrical grid causes power outages throughout Kyiv
About 100,000 households in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast were left without power due to a technical failure caused by damage accumulated from constant Russian attacks, national power company Ukrenergo announced on June 21.
Power was restored within an hour; however, restoration work is still ongoing, and the local cause of the failure is currently under investigation.
"The number one reason for the outage is the grid being damaged by six months of mass Russian air attacks,” Ukrenergo stated.
“Repairs are underway at all damaged facilities. However, there is hidden damage that sometimes become evident long after the attacks occur.”
Microfractures, which form far away from missile impact sites, can lead to significant damage after several months. Repairing this damage takes time and the risk of equipment failure remains high, Ukrenergo explained.
Emergency outages were implemented on the morning of June 21 in the Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Podilskyi districts of the capital. Approximately 100,000 households were left without power. Water supply was also affected.
Power outages also occurred in Kyiv Oblast, particularly in the Bucha District.
From October to April, Russia targeted Ukrainian energy facilities with cruise missiles and attack drones in an attempt to cause a complete blackout in the country. Although the worst-case scenario was avoided and power has been largely restored in Kyiv, the long-term consequences of the shelling have yet to be pinned down.
