President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has called on Ukraine’s partners to supply the country’s army with Leopards tanks, German news channel Tagesschau reported on Jan. 7.
Metsola praised the decision of Germany and the United States to transfer Marder and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles to the Ukrainian army. She also noted that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin expects Europe to abandon Ukraine.
"This should not be allowed,” Metsola said.
“It’s important that Europe continues to politically, humanitarianly and militarily support Ukrainians,” she said.
But it is also important that Europe strengthens its own defence and becomes a real military alliance.
U.S. newspaper the Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Poland had begun to consider supplying Ukraine with Leopards tanks. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki confirmed negotiations were underway, but said Poland does not plan to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine without support from a broader coalition of allies.
Finland has also confirmed its readiness to supply Leopard 2 combat tanks to Ukraine, if “Europe adopts this step in general.”
