Priest from Russian-led church sentenced to 7 years in prison for collaborating with invaders

A priest from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) from the town of Yarova, Donetsk Oblast, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for collaboration (Part 5 of Article 111−1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office reported on Feb. 16.

The prosecutor proved in court that in May 2022, the abbot of the so Kazan parish of the Yarova settlement of the Horlivka eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) conspired with the Russian invaders and, acting on their instructions, gathered local residents in the premises of a club.

There, he proclaimed that the settlement was controlled by Russian troops, and called on its inhabitants to support the candidacy of the new head of the local government for cooperation with the enemy.

The priest was arrested after the liberation of Yarova.

Yarova is a small settlement in Donetsk Oblast, located about 20 kilometers to the north of the key oblast town of Slovyansk.

The area was liberated during a Ukrainian army counter-offensive in which Ukraine regained control of most of Kharkiv Oblast, and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts in September.
