The owner of the Wagner mercenary company, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has said he is sure that no one will be held to account for the brutal murder of one of his own mercenaries, Yevgeny Nuzhin, by some of his fellow hired soldiers.
Prigozhin’s press service published the corresponding statement on Nov. 17.
Commenting on the accusation that Nuzhin was murdered for surrendering to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Prigozhin said that no one would be prosecuted, as the body of the Wagner soldier, who was returned to Russia after being captured as part of a POW swap, was never found.
“A criminal case under Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation is instituted in the presence of a body. If there is no body – there is no case,” Prigozhinsaid.
Telegram channels close to Prigozhin were the first to release videos of Nuzhin’s execution.
“A dog deserves a dog’s death,” said Prigozhin said in his initial comments about the murder.
Nuzhin was captured by the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the beginning of September. After that, he gave an interview in which he declared his hatred for the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and his desire to join the Ukrainian army to fight against the Russian Armed Forces.
According to available data, the mercenary returned to Russia as part of the exchange of prisoners.
In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on the footage of the murder of the mercenary, saying that he was unsure if the footage was genuine.
“It’s none of our business,” Peskov added.
