A recreational center near the Russian-occupied city of Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov, highly likely with a Russian military hospital set up in it, has caught fire, the city council reported on Facebook on Feb. 19, referring to reports from locals.

"Berdyansk residents reported on social media that there was a big fire on the spit (most likely it is a recreational base called Heavenly Corner)", the message reads.

The center is located on the spit, or long, thin, sandy peninsula that stretches from the south of Berdyansk in a south-western direction into the Sea of Azov. It is a popular local tourist destination, with hotels, guest houses, restaurants and private and public beaches.

According to the preliminary reports, the invaders had set up a hospital at the recreation center that was reported to be on fire.

Local Telegram channels wrote that the occupying authorities said a short circuit was the cause of the fire.

According to the Russians, a restaurant, a boiler house and some garages caught fire.

"It is unclear why a restaurant on the spit is on fire in winter,” one person said in comments on social media.

“But we can say for sure that they wouldn’t put out the fire if they didn’t use (the recreational center). So this facility (must be) of great importance to them."
