Russia attacks east overnight, 4 cruise missiles, 20 flying bombs and an aircraft shot down

The Russian military attacked Ukraine with 20 Shahed-136/131 flying bomb drones and 16 different types of missiles overnight on May 22, targeting mostly military and infrastructure facilities in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the Ukrainian Air Force has reported.

Explosions were heard in Dnipro, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhya overnight.

Ukrainian air defenses downed all of the launched drones and four out of 16 missiles, as well as an Su-35 multi-purpose fighter in Kherson Oblast. The fighter was reported to have crashed into Ukrainian territorial waters in the Black Sea.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia attacked Ukraine with the following weapons:

  • four Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles air-launched from Tu-95MS strategic bombers from the Caspian Sea area;
  • five Kh-22 converted long-range anti-ship missiles from Tu-22M3 strategic bombers over the Sea of Azov and Russia's Kursk Oblast;
  • two Iskander-M ballistic missiles from Ukraine’s Russian-occupied peninsula of Crimea
  • five S-300 long-range surface-to-air missiles that Russia uses for ground attacks, launched from the occupied part of Zaporizhzhia Oblast;
  • 20 Iranian-made suicide drones, launched from the south and north;

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Serhiy Lysak reported on Telegram on the aftermath of the attack with photos, noting that eight civilians had been injured in the region.

  • Seven people were injured in Synelnykove District by falling debris from intercepted drones and missiles. Three houses, nine high-rise buildings, a kindergarten and administrative building were damaged, as well as six cars.
  • A 27-year-old rescuer was injured in Dnipro District when Russia hit a rescue unit there. There were two fires that have already been extinguished. Over ten trucks and cars were destroyed, and the same amount of special equipment was damaged. Two buses and 25 private cars were also damaged.
  • The occupiers hit a business premises and damaged three buildings in the City of Dnipro.

Power partly went out in the city of Zaporizhzhzya due to a Russian attack on energy facilities in the region, Anatoliy Kurtev, Zaporizhzhya city council's secretary reported on Telegram.

"(Repair) work is ongoing – electricity and water are gradually being restored to the city," he wrote.

No damage in Kharkiv was reported.
